IPL 2026: The Season Is On Fire — Early Performances, Star Players & This Week’s Big Predictions
By SportzSage | March 30, 2026
Two matches in and IPL 2026 is already delivering everything we love about the world’s greatest T20 competition — scorching batting tracks, monsoon-level run rates, and moments that remind you why cricket can be utterly addictive. Let’s break down what we’ve seen so far, who’s been shining, and — crucially — what to expect from this week’s fixtures. Because in T20 cricket, if you’re not predicting, you’re not playing.
The Season So Far: Teams in the Frame
Royal Challengers Bengaluru — The Champions Mean Business (2 pts | W1 L0)
Defending champions and they looked like it from ball one. RCB’s six-wicket demolition of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the season opener at Chinnaswamy was a statement of the highest order. Chasing 202 on a surface that had many questioning whether there was enough there for the bowlers, RCB knocked it off with 26 balls to spare. Rajat Patidar’s side look dangerous in all three departments, and the absence of Josh Hazlewood hasn’t even registered as a problem yet. The biggest worry for every other team in this competition? Hazlewood isn’t even playing yet.
Mumbai Indians — Jinx Busters Back in Business (2 pts | W1 L0)
MI hadn’t won a season opener since 2012. That 14-year hoodoo is now well and truly gone after their breathtaking chase of 221 against KKR at the Wankhede. A record-highest successful chase at that ground, and it was done with such authority that it barely felt like a chase at all. Under Hardik Pandya, MI look balanced, hungry, and — most importantly — they look like they believe. Don’t be surprised if this is the year the Blue Army returns to the top of the mountain.
Sunrisers Hyderabad — Potential Aplenty, but Leaks to Plug (0 pts | W0 L1)
SRH were competitive on opening night, posting 201/9. Ishan Kishan, assuming the captaincy from an injured Pat Cummins, showed tremendous character with a captain’s knock of 80 off 38 balls. But the bowling? That’s the real question mark. RCB made 203/4 look comfortable, and without Cummins spearheading the attack, SRH are going to need solutions fast. Eshan Malinga and the other seamers were exposed, and shrewd teams will already be plotting their approach.
Kolkata Knight Riders — Wounded but Not Down (0 pts | W0 L1)
KKR came to the Wankhede with an injury-ravaged bowling attack and ultimately paid for it. The batting wasn’t the problem — Ajinkya Rahane struck a composed 67, Angkrish Raghuvanshi hammered 51 off 29, and Rinku Singh’s 33* showed his finishing prowess is no fluke. But Harshit Rana and Akash Deep are out for the season, Pathirana is unavailable early on, and Cameron Green isn’t bowling. Without penetration in the middle overs, they’re going to find life very difficult. KKR face SRH this Thursday — a must-win moment to stop an early crisis from becoming a full-blown one.
Players Who’ve Already Made Their Mark
Virat Kohli (RCB) — The man who refuses to age. An unbeaten 69 off 38 balls in the season opener, including his 64th IPL half-century. He’s now just 29 runs from overtaking Shoaib Malik’s total T20 run-scoring tally and will likely hit that milestone this week. At 37, Kohli is batting at a strike rate that would shame men half his age. He is the heartbeat of RCB.
Jacob Duffy (RCB) — The New Zealand seamer was keeping Hazlewood’s seat warm, he said. On this evidence, it may get uncomfortable for Hazlewood when he returns. Three wickets in IPL debut, hitting the deck hard, exploiting the Chinnaswamy conditions brilliantly. Player of the Match on his first night. One to watch all tournament.
Devdutt Padikkal (RCB) — 61 off 26 balls, including seven fours and four sixes, at a strike rate of 234.62. Impact sub extraordinaire. He smashed the fastest IPL fifty of his career that night. His partnership of 101 with Kohli off just 45 balls effectively ended the contest.
Ishan Kishan (SRH) — Even in a losing cause, Kishan’s 80 off 38 in his first outing as SRH captain was exceptional. A 97-run fourth-wicket stand with Klaasen gave SRH the platform they needed. He’s going to be crucial to SRH’s turnaround prospects.
Rohit Sharma (MI) — Pure vintage Rohit. The 23-ball fifty — his fastest ever in the IPL — was a masterclass in controlled aggression. Six sixes, six fours, 78 off 38. This was Rohit at his absolute best, and at Wankhede, in front of his home crowd, he looked utterly unstoppable. This was his 50th fifty-plus score in IPL history. He is not done.
Ryan Rickelton (MI) — The South African opener was picked ahead of the experienced Quinton de Kock and repaid that faith with a brilliant 81 off 43. The 148-run opening stand he forged with Rohit broke the contest inside 12 overs. A genuine match-winner and a name that will become very familiar over the coming weeks.
Shardul Thakur (MI) — On MI debut, took 3/39 against KKR and was named Player of the Match. Thakur has hopped across six franchises in his career; Hardik Pandya wants him at MI “for the rest of your career.” On that opening performance, you can see why.

Match 3 — Rajasthan Royals vs Chennai Super Kings
Monday 30 March | Barsapara Stadium, Guwahati | 7:30 PM IST
This is a fascinating early-season clash. CSK ended last season rock bottom and are going through a significant rebuild, pivoting away from experience and towards youth. Rajasthan Royals meanwhile are under new captain Riyan Parag, a young leader brimming with energy and ambition. Guwahati is a venue that tends to favour batters, and with both teams yet to open their accounts, expect a full-blooded contest.
Match 4 — Punjab Kings vs Gujarat Titans
Tuesday 31 March | Mullanpur | 7:30 PM IST
Two compelling storylines here. Punjab Kings were finalists last season and carry real confidence into this campaign. Gujarat Titans under Shubman Gill are hungry after a disappointing previous outing. Mullanpur in Punjab tends to offer true, fast pitches — a belter of a surface that should produce fireworks.
Match 5 — Lucknow Super Giants vs Delhi Capitals
Wednesday 1 April | Ekana Stadium, Lucknow | 7:30 PM IST
Axar Patel’s Delhi Capitals versus Rishabh Pant’s LSG. Two captains who play the game with flair and aggression. Ekana is a fortress for LSG and that home advantage is real — their crowd is passionate and the ground has seen some extraordinary home performances. DC are, on paper, competitive but lack proven match-winners in key positions.
Match 6 — Kolkata Knight Riders vs Sunrisers Hyderabad
Thursday 2 April | Eden Gardens, Kolkata | 7:30 PM IST
This is the match I’m most excited about this week. Two teams who’ve both lost their openers and need a result badly. Eden Gardens is one of the great cricket arenas on earth, and when KKR play at home, the energy is extraordinary. But KKR’s bowling woes are a genuine crisis and SRH, despite their first-match defeat, have batting firepower across the order.
The Bigger Picture
Two matches, and what’s already clear is that IPL 2026 is a batters’ paradise. Both games saw teams chase 200-plus totals with ease. Bowlers need to find answers — and fast — because pitches this season appear to be offering minimal assistance. Expect teams to go aggressive at auction replacements if injuries deepen their bowling stocks.
RCB and MI are the early pace-setters and both look genuinely title-worthy. But eight other teams are yet to play their first match, and in a competition this condensed and competitive, momentum swings weekly.
One thing is certain: get your predictions lined up, trust the data, and follow SportzSage. In a tournament this unpredictable, having the best model in the business behind you is the closest thing to a guaranteed edge there is.
It’s going to be some season.
