Eight wickets for 35 runs. Read that again, because Test cricket rarely produces a number that brutal. Ollie Robinson did it at Lord’s this week, and England walked away with a series. If you follow cricket and football results closely, the last seven days gave you everything. A seam-bowling masterclass in London. A seven-goal thriller at Stamford Bridge. A hat-trick at Old Trafford. Let’s break it all down.
Cricket and Football Results: England Seal the Series at Lord’s
England beat Pakistan by 194 runs in the second Test at Lord’s. The match finished on 30 August, a full day early. That result gives England an unassailable 2-0 lead with one Test still to play.
The scorecard tells a strange story. England made 290 and 208. Neither total looked commanding. Pakistan replied with 110 and 194.
So how did a modest England total turn into a 194-run win? The Lord’s pitch offered seam movement all week. Both attacks exploited it. England simply had the better bowler.
Ollie Robinson: Eight for 35 in 27 Overs
Robinson took 4 for 11 in the first innings and 4 for 24 in the second. His match figures read 8 for 35 from 27 overs. That is an economy rate barely above one run per over across an entire Test.
He also collected the Player of the Match award for the third consecutive Test. Robinson has found a length that pins batters on the crease, then nips the ball both ways off it.
Josh Tongue supported him with three wickets. Jofra Archer added two more, including a 91mph bouncer that Harry Brook gobbled up at second slip.
England’s Batting Did Just Enough
Nobody in the England side made a hundred, and yet the runs still arrived when they mattered most. Jamie Smith top-scored in the first innings with 61 from 80 balls, striking ten boundaries along the way.
Jordan Cox chipped in with 55, and that pair rescued an innings that had wobbled badly against Mohammad Abbas.
Dan Lawrence then top-scored in the second innings with 54, while Harry Brook made a busy 34 from 56 deliveries. None of those scores look spectacular on paper.
However, context is everything when you read cricket and football results. On a Lord’s surface where 22 wickets fell inside three days, a fifty carried the weight of a normal century.
Pakistan Fought, But Fell Short
Chasing 389, Pakistan needed a giant partnership. Saud Shakeel very nearly delivered one. He fell for 97, three runs short of a century that would have been remembered for years.
Mohammad Abbas deserves credit too. He took a five-wicket haul as Pakistan set up that fourth-innings target, and he was excellent in the first innings as well with 4 for 73.
However, Pakistan’s top order kept collapsing against the moving ball. Bowled out for 110 on day two, they never recovered the momentum.
For England, this is the first Test series win since December 2024. Joe Root leads the side. Marcus Trescothick is the interim coach. Both will sleep well this week.
Premier League: The Best Cricket and Football Results of the Weekend
Matchday 2 of the 2026-27 Premier League season delivered goals in bulk. Nine matches were played between 28 and 30 August. Aston Villa host Arsenal on Monday night to close the round.
Chelsea 4-3 Brighton: Seven Goals at the Bridge
This was the match of the weekend. Chelsea raced into a 3-0 lead inside 32 minutes. Romeo Lavia struck in the 4th minute. Pedro Neto added a second on 14. João Pedro made it three.
Then Brighton refused to die. Malick Yalcouye pulled one back on 35 minutes. A João Pedro own goal on 63 minutes made it 3-2 and turned the ground nervous.
Cole Palmer settled it on 74 minutes with Chelsea’s fourth. Pascal Gross scored deep into stoppage time, but Brighton ran out of clock.
Xabi Alonso now has two wins from two as Chelsea manager. Most importantly, his side is scoring freely. The defensive work still needs attention.
Manchester United 5-2 Ipswich: Bruno Fernandes Takes Over
Old Trafford saw a comeback. Ipswich led early through Leif Davis, and Chuba Akpom added a second for the visitors.
Bruno Fernandes then produced a hat-trick. He scored on 40 minutes, converted a penalty on 61, and completed the set on 68. Harry Maguire and Bryan Mbeumo also found the net.
As a result, United collected their first three points of the campaign in style. Fernandes looked every inch a captain in that second half.
Manchester City Roll On
Crystal Palace 1-4 Manchester City was the Friday night headline. City have now won both league matches and sit top of the table with six points and a +4 goal difference.
Meanwhile, Newcastle won 2-0 away at Tottenham. That is a serious result on the road, and it lifts Newcastle to four points.
The Rest of Matchday 2
Liverpool drew 2-2 at home with Nottingham Forest. Two draws from two leaves the champions with plenty of work to do.
Elsewhere, Bournemouth and Everton shared a 1-1 draw. Leeds United and Brentford also finished 1-1. Sunderland edged Fulham 1-0 for a valuable home win.
Promoted Hull City won 1-0 away at Coventry City. Hull now have two wins from two and sit second. That is the story nobody predicted in pre-season.
How the Table Looks After Two Rounds
Manchester City lead on six points with a goal difference of plus four. Hull City sit second, also on six points, which is a remarkable start for a promoted club.
Chelsea are third on six points, though their goal difference of plus two reflects those three conceded on Sunday. Brentford, Newcastle and Everton follow on four points each.
At the other end, Fulham are still searching for a point. Two rounds is far too early to panic, but the early cricket and football results always shape the narrative.
Elsewhere in Cricket This Week
The Caribbean Premier League continued through the week. St Lucia Kings beat Jamaica Kingsmen, while the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons defeated the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots to climb to fourth. Rain washed out the Patriots’ fixture on 30 August after the toss.
In addition, India and Sri Lanka drew the second Test at Colombo, which ended on 27 August. India had already won the opener at Galle by 165 runs, so they hold a 1-0 series lead.
SportzSage Predictions: Spot On Again
Every week, our model reads the same signals that decided these matches. This week, the signals were loud, and the week’s cricket and football results lined up neatly with what the data was saying beforehand.
Take Lord’s. SportzSage weighted overhead conditions, recent seam-bowling form and Pakistan’s away batting record against the moving ball. All three pointed the same way. England were the value call from day one, and the model never wavered.
The Chelsea match was different. Our algorithm flagged a high expected-goals total for both sides, driven by Brighton’s aggressive line and Chelsea’s early-game pressing. A seven-goal game was exactly the kind of outcome the numbers suggested.
Why the SportzSage Algorithm Works
SportzSage is not a guessing game. The app combines a mathematical model with expert human analysis. Here is what goes into every call.
First, the model ingests recent form, head-to-head history and venue-specific data. Lord’s behaves differently to the Oval. Old Trafford behaves differently to Stamford Bridge. Venue matters enormously.
Second, it weights player availability and workload. A quick bowler in his third Test in five weeks is not the same bowler. Neither is a midfielder returning from injury.
Third, our analysts review the output. They add the context a model cannot see, such as pitch reports, team news and weather. That human layer is what separates SportzSage from a raw statistics feed.
Finally, the app updates continuously. Team sheets land an hour before kick-off, and the numbers move with them.
That combination is why so many fans now check SportzSage before they check the cricket and football results anywhere else. The app tells you what is likely, and just as importantly, it tells you why.
What to Watch Next Week
The third England versus Pakistan Test is next on the cricket calendar. England have the series won, so expect selection experiments and a Pakistan side playing for pride. Wounded teams are dangerous teams.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa host Arsenal on Monday night to close Matchday 2. Arsenal opened with a 3-0 win and will fancy another away from home.
The Caribbean Premier League also builds towards its business end. Trinbago Knight Riders and Guyana Amazon Warriors met on 31 August in a genuinely important table clash.
